Cardiac Monitoring

Detecting and reducing post-operative myocardial ischemia

StriCS - a novel diagnostic system for cardiac monitoring is used for early detection of post operative myocardial ischemia. CMA has developed a highly sensitive system that provides real-time* and continuous measurements of metabolic markers inside the Coronary Sinus. StriCS gives an early warning of ischemic events and enables more rapid lifesaving interventions.

It is estimated that almost 1,5 million open-heart surgeries are conducted in the industrialized world. Despite enormous efforts and resources, more than 3% or 60,000, of these patients die due to complications following the surgery. Among higher risk patients, mortality rates exceed 10%. Our vision is to reduce post-operative mortality caused by myocardial ischemia with 50%.

More than half of post-operative mortality is caused by post-operative myocardial infarction and heart failure. In several studies, early detection of such events has proven to be the best way of reducing in-hospital and long-term cardiac morbidity and mortality. There is today no accepted gold standard to achieve early detection, and the industry is urging for new monitoring techniques to help save lives and reduce health care costs.

Background

The inventors of StriCS are two of Sweden’s leading thoracic surgeons, Professor Anders Franco-Cereceda and Ass. Professor Jan Liska, active at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden. In their work with surgery and post-operative care they identified the need of more accurate and sensitive monitoring techniques. They needed quicker response to therapies and the earliest possible signs of upcoming myocardial ischemia.

Following seven years of research, a number of publications, a dissertation and filed patents, Prof. Franco-Cereceda and Ass. Prof. Liska entered into a joint venture together with CMA, with the ambition of solving this clinical need by bringing a completely new approach for cardiac monitoring to the clinic.
